At 01.19 hours on 2 Dec, 1941, the unescorted Grelhead (Master Charles John Pirie) was torpedoed and sunk by U-562 two miles north of Punta Negri, Morocco. The master, 34 crew members and six gunners were lost. Two crew members were rescued and landed at Tangiers.

The Auckland Castle, 1,084 grt. (Mordey, Jones & Co., Newport, Mon.} had sailed from Hartlepool with a cargo of coal. On the 24th August 1918, the ship was intercepted and sunk without warning by UC-59 some five miles off Farne Islands killing twelve crew including three from Newport. The body of one man was later recovered and buried in Edingburgh.
There are ten Merchant Navy casualties officially recorded as being 70 years old when lost in WW1 with the oldest being recorded as aged 73

His plane was on fire and he flew inland so that his navigator, Ken Weatherburn from Huddersfield Yorkshire, could bail out, he then flew back towards the sea to avoid civilian casualties.
He died of burns 22nd July 1943 aged 21 in or near Carlisle.
Cause Of Death: Killed by accidental explosion of a Stokes Ammo Dugout.
Service History: Enlisted 18/9/14 ; Plymouth Bn. MEF 6/2/15-31/7/15 Heat Stroke, rejoined 2nd RM Bn. 14/9/15-17/6/16 to 188th Brigade Light Trench Mortar Battery.
Notes: 1st RM Bn. War Diary 3/8/16 reads:- "Front Line Trenches ANGRES II Sector. An explosion occurred in a Dugout in which was stowed about 100 rounds of Stokes Gun Ammo. The Dugout was completely wrecked & 1 Corporal & 4 Privates of the 188th Trench Mortar Battery were killed.
